Why Laser Cutting

Why Automotive Fabricators Choose Automotive Laser Cutting

Custom builds, one-off performance vehicles, and bespoke restorations all demand precision that traditional cutting simply cannot deliver consistently. When every component is unique and there is no off-the-shelf part to fall back on, a piece that doesn’t fit right has to be remade. That costs time and money.

Here is why fabricators across Southeast Queensland rely on laser cutting:

The Problem

Why It Happens

Our Solution

CNC fibre laser cutting also reduces material waste and improves repeatability compared to manual methods. Absolute Laser Cutting works with everyone from backyard custom builders through to professional performance shops and panel fabricators. No job is too small.

Materials We Cut

Materials for Automotive Laser Cutting

Material choice is about matching the metal to the mechanical demands, weight targets, and environment of each specific component. Here is a quick reference:

Material Max Thickness Best For Key Benefit
Mild Steel 20mm Chassis, suspension, structural plates Welds cleanly, takes powder coat, strong and cost-effective
Stainless Steel 304/316 12mm Exhaust heat shields, underbody, fuel system Corrosion resistant, smooth edge finish for show-quality builds
Aluminium 5052/6061 10mm Interior panels, bulkheads, race weight reduction Lightweight, clean edges suitable for anodising or direct install
Mild steel material used in laser cutting and metal fabrication services

Mild Steel, The Fabricator's Default

Mild steel is the backbone of custom automotive fabrication. We cut MS250 and MS350 up to 20mm thick, covering light internal brackets through to heavy chassis and structural plates. Mild steel welds cleanly, takes powder coat and paint well, and delivers the strength that structural automotive components demand.

Stainless steel laser cutting for precision metal fabrication and custom components

Stainless Steel, For Underbody and Exhaust Applications

Stainless steel laser cutting suits applications where corrosion resistance is critical, including exhaust heat shields, underbody components, fuel system brackets, and fittings exposed to water and road grime. We cut 304 and 316 grade stainless up to 12mm, producing smooth edge finishes ideal for show-quality builds.

Aluminium laser cutting services for precision fabrication and custom metal parts

Aluminium, For Weight-Conscious Builds

Aluminium laser cutting is increasingly common in performance and race vehicle builds where every kilogram counts. Interior panels, bulkheads, dash blanks, and electronics mounting plates in aluminium save weight without sacrificing rigidity. We cut 5052 and 6061 alloys up to 10mm, producing clean edges suitable for anodising, brushed finishing, or direct installation.

How It Works

How to Order Automotive Laser Cutting Parts from Absolute

Getting laser cut automotive parts from Absolute is straightforward. Here is what the process looks like from brief to delivery:

01

Prepare Your File

DXF or DWG is the preferred format, giving us clean, accurate vector geometry ready for the machine. If you are working from a sketch, a photo of an existing part, or a PDF drawing, send it through anyway. Our in-house CAD team converts non-DXF files as part of the job at no extra charge.

02

Specify Your Material and Thickness

Tell us what material you need and the thickness required. If you are not sure, describe the application and we will advise on the right spec. For structural automotive components, we will flag if a different thickness would better suit the load requirements.

03

Receive Your Same-Day Quote

Send files before 2pm and a quote comes back the same business day. Pricing is itemised and transparent, covering material, cut length, and sheet utilisation. No hidden setup fees, no minimum order surcharges.

04

We Cut and Dispatch

Standard turnaround is 2 to 3 business days. For urgent build deadlines, our express 24-hour service is available. Parts are checked before dispatch and freighted to your workshop across Gold Coast and Southeast Queensland.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Automotive Laser Cutting

Can’t find your answer here? Call us on 07 5563 2555 or email sales@absolutelaser.com.au — we’re happy to help.

Can you cut one-off custom parts for a single vehicle build?

Absolutely. No minimum order means single parts are always welcome. One-off prototype components, replacement parts for modified vehicles, and custom brackets are some of our most common requests. Send your file and we will quote it the same day.

DXF or DWG is preferred as it goes directly to the machine without conversion. We also accept PDF drawings, photos of existing parts, and hand sketches with measurements. Our CAD team handles file conversion and preparation as part of your order at no extra charge.

We cut mild steel up to 20mm thick on our industrial fibre laser. For most automotive structural applications including chassis plates, gussets, subframe mounts and suspension brackets, this covers the full range of thicknesses required. Thicker structural sections typically require bending or machining after laser cutting.

Yes. Aluminium laser cutting is popular for performance and race vehicle builds where every kilogram matters. We cut 5052 and 6061 alloys up to 10mm thick using fibre laser technology, producing clean edges without the burring that plasma cutting regularly introduces on aluminium surfaces.

Standard turnaround is 2 to 3 business days from quote approval. For urgent build deadlines, our express 24-hour service cuts and dispatches parts the next day. Let us know your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm availability on the spot.

For custom automotive work, laser cutting wins on precision, edge quality, and consistency. Plasma cutting is faster on very thick plate but produces a wider kerf and rougher edges. For brackets, panels, and components that need to fit or weld cleanly first time, laser cutting is the better choice.

Our CNC fibre laser cutting holds tolerances to ±0.1mm as standard, tighter than plasma and more consistent than manual cutting methods. For automotive fabrication this means parts align correctly, weld without shimming, and fit into assemblies without rework. Flag tolerance-critical requirements in your job brief when enquiring.

Yes. Laser cut flat blanks are specifically designed to be folded, bent, and welded after cutting. The clean, precise cut edges from our fibre laser are ideal for press brake forming, produce consistent weld preparation, and allow many automotive components to be bent into final shape after cutting.

Mild steel is the most common choice, being strong, weldable, and cost-effective. For underbody or exposed applications where corrosion resistance matters, 304 stainless is a better option. Aluminium suits weight-sensitive brackets in performance and race builds. The right choice depends on load requirements, environment, and weight targets.
